TANZANIA
Tanzania Leaf Tobacco Company Limited (TLTC) was incorporated by Universal in 1968 to oversee Universal’s purchases of FCV leaf tobacco from the Tanzania Tobacco Board, an agency of the Government of Tanzania. TLTC and other buyers in the local market were then permitted to contract directly with grower organisations in 1996. In 1997 Universal purchased the Government processing facility in Morogoro, Tanzania, which heralded the incorporation of Tanzania Tobacco Processors Limited (TTPL) as the new entity owning the processing facility and providing processing services to TLTC and other leaf buying companies operating in Tanzania.

Today the two companies employ at peak season almost 3,500 people, with TLTC indirectly contracting with 12,000 growers for the purchase of their tobacco, through farmer cooperatives known as Primary Societies.
The tobacco growing areas of Tanzania are spread very widely across the country, requiring an extensive agronomy footprint dedicated to promoting a sustainably grown crop and an efficient supply chain focusing on the farmer, the crop and the environment. One such focus is the development of more efficient curing barns that require much less wood and join together with the other aspects of the Company’s sustainable curing programme.
TLTC has its own training facility at its Urambo Seed Farm, for the continued development of its field teams. The farm also produces tobacco seed which is provided free of charge to contracted farmers.
TLTC and TTPL work closely with the local communities particularly supporting education and health.
